    Atlantic Council

    Roles and Responsibilities

    The Atlantic Council is elected at the PSAC Triennial Atlantic Regional Convention. The PSAC Atlantic Council Executive shall be composed of:

    • The Regional Executive Vice President
    • Two Regional Directors from each of the following provinces elected in Caucus at the PSAC Triennial Atlantic Regional Convention:
       

      New Brunswick

    Newfoundland and Labrador

    Nova Scotia

    Prince Edward Island

    • Two Women Directors elected in a Women's Caucus at the PSAC Triennial Atlantic Convention one, of which one is elected from Newfoundland and Labrador.
    • One Director from each of the following equity groups elected in caucus at the PSAC Triennial Atlantic Convention:

    Aboriginal Members

    Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Members

    Members with Disabilities

    Racially Visible Members

    • One Francophone Director elected in caucus at the PSAC Triennial Atlantic Convention
    • Two Non-Treasury Board Directors elected in a Non-Treasury Board caucus at the Triennial PSAC Atlantic Regional Convention, one of which will be from Newfoundland and Labrador.

    Atlantic Council

    The Atlantic Council meets at least once a year in person and through conference calls. Council advises the REVP and recommends actions that benefit the PSAC membership in the Atlantic.

    The REVP works with Council to establish committees of council, terms of references to guide the work and activites of each committee. The Committees work closely with the REVP and staff to ensure the best interests of members in the Atlantic is considered in the work of the Atlantic Region and that programs are delivered.

    The Committees of Council are:

    Communications

    The Communication Committee mandate is to establish and maintain effective communications within the Atlantic Region in both offical languages and to communicate to the membership the activites of Altantic Council. This committee worked with planning around "The People Behind the Service" campaign and to ensure that contents of the PSAC Atlantic Regional website meet the needs of the membership.

    Education

    The Education Committee is an energetic and busy Committee. This Committee leads the planning for Atlantic Schools and organizes fund raising events to benefit Atlantic communities at each School. They have worked with the REVP and staff to develop a three year education plan. This Committee conducted a survey of membership education needs and ensures those needs are considered in education planning.

    Finance

    Three members of Council members are elected by the PSAC Atlantic Council Executive to serve as a Finance Committee. The committee is responsible for the preparation and recommendation of Council budgets and performs an annual audit of Council finances and expenditures. The Finance Committee submits written reports to PSAC Atlantic Council Executive meetings, the PSAC Atlantic Triennial Convention, locals and branches.

    Health Safety and Environment Committee

    The Health and Safety committee conducted a needs survey on Health and Safety and organized a series of Health and safety meetings throughout the Atlantic in 2004. They are working with the REVP and Staff to plan and deliver Health, Safety and Environment conferences for October, 2005.

    Human Rights

    The Human Rights Committee is active in promoting Human Rights in the Atlantic Region. This Committee will lead the establishment of Human Rights Committees throughout the Atlantic. This Committee is preparing a brochure on Human Rights for Convention. Please join the Human Rights Committee logo contest and help us design our logo!

    Political Action

    The Political Action Committee of Council works with the REVP and staff to promote and carryout political and social justice activity in the Atlantic Region. The committee works with the REVP to promote the establishment and participation of active Area Councils in the Atlantic Region. The Political Action Committee has implemented plans that have been approved by the AEC and National Board of Directors on various National Campaigns such as Anti-Scab Legislation.

    Women's Committee

    The Women's Committee is very active on women's issues. The Women's Committee led the planning and delivery of two Women's Conferences - one in Newfoundland and Labrador and the other in the Maritimes. The Women's Committee will lead a major lobby effort in 2005 in support of childcare, pay equity, protective reassignment and violence against women.
