As you know, the employer has proposed to eliminate sick leave and family-related leave and replace it with a short-term disability program. We heard from members all across the country that this offer makes them sick!

There are many problems with this proposal. To name a few: it provides less money for people who are sick, it freezes people’s sick leave banks, it wouldn’t protect everyone equally, and it would be administered by a giant insurance company. This plan would represent a huge step back from the gains we have all fought for in previous rounds.

At the table, we have repeatedly asked the employer how much they would save with this program. They have refused to show us any cost projections. All that they have said is that "there is no start up cost."

But what does this mean for you from a financial perspective? The current sick leave and family-related responsibility leave are there to give you insurance against your sickness or that of your family. As long as you have sick credits in your bank, you get 100% of your salary if you’re off sick.
