National Board of Directors - On-Line
NBoD Motion on Free Trade and Globalization as adopted by the PSAC NBoD in January 2001
WHEREAS the economic restructuring policies of international organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund,
international trade agreements and the increasing economic power of multi-national corporations have had a substantial impact on the incomes
and employment security of Canadian workers, including PSAC members; and
WHEREAS the economic integration of countries under international trade agreements including the WTO, the North American Free Trade
Agreement and the General Agreement on Trade in Services has, and continues to, undermine national sovereignty while providing corporations
with access to the delivery of public services; and
WHEREAS all recent international trade agreements have resulted in the privatization of government services; and
WHEREAS these manifestations of globalization undermine the economic and social lives of PSAC members:
BE IT RESOLVED THAT the PSAC reaffirm its long-standing commitment to the public delivery of government services and commits to making the
defence of public services a political priority; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the PSAC provide its membership with information on the impact of globalization and trade agreements on the
delivery of public services and public service employment in Canada and internationally; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the PSAC work with the Canadian Labour Congress, Federations of Labour, District Labour Councils and social
action/justice organizations who are working to educate Canadians on the impact of globalization and trade agreements and mobilize opposition to
the practice, in all its incarnations; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the PSAC National President provide the NBoD with periodic updates on the work that the PSAC has undertaken
to inform members of the impact of globalization and free trade agreements, and specific membership and coalition activities that the AEC has
supported and approved.
