PSAC is outraged at the cuts to SWC. The job cuts will affect close to 40 PSAC members. And if fully implemented, the cuts will reduce SWC to little more than a granting agency and secretariat to the Minister. How efficient is that? And where's the accountability?

We want accountability. We want the federal government to take responsibility for achieving women's equality. And we want concrete steps towards achieving it. Canadian women deserve no less.

We want the $5 million cuts to SWC to be reversed.

We want the government to implement the recommendations of the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women regarding strengthening of Status of Women Canada and improving the Women's Program.

We want women's equality to be re-written into SWC's mandate.

We want a Status of Women Canada with teeth.

We want a Status of Women Canada with strong internal leadership from within.

We want a Status of Women Canada that will advocate for women's equality, and speak out against inequality. We need a Status of Women Canada that will identify and document inequalities and propose solutions to overcome them.

We want the funding to women's groups to be restricted to not-for-profit groups.

We want independent research on women's issues. We want in-house policy development on gender equality. We want in-house monitoring of government policy for its impact on women. We want women's equality experts in the regions. We want SWC to promote women's equality all over the place – inside and outside government here in Canada and internationally.

We want a commitment on the part of the New Government of Canada to women's equality. And we want the resources we need to achieve it.
