MEDIA ADVISORY

PUBLIC SERVICE ALLIANCE OF CANADA
14th Triennial National Convention
The Westin Harbour Castle Hotel, Toronto
May 1 – May 5, 2006

OTTAWA – Over 1,000 trade unionists from across Canada will gather in Toronto for the 14 th Triennial Convention of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the sixth largest union in the country.

The Convention delegates will set the direction for their union for the next three years by passing resolutions and will elect a new national president. After six years at the helm, PSAC National President Nycole Turmel will be stepping down. She leaves a legacy that saw the union increasingly taking on the broader issues of human rights and social justice, while continuing to fight for members' rights and improvements in the workplace. The theme of this year's convention, Making a World of Difference , reflects the PSAC's determination to forge ahead in this direction.

The convention officially opens on Monday, May 1, at 9:00 a.m., highlighted by Turmel's address. However, on Sunday April 30, at 3:00 p.m., the union will hold a pre-convention forum to discuss political action and social justice. This forum will provide delegates an opportunity to discuss the actions the union needs to take to protect and defend public services and to protect labour and human rights nationally and internationally. Forum panelists will include NDP Member of Parliament Olivia Chow, Bloc Québécois Member of Parliament Carole Lavallée, British Columbia Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair and Ottawa mayoralty candidate Alex Munter.

Speakers during the week-long convention will include, among others, Toronto Mayor David Miller and Canadian Labour Congress President Ken Georgetti.

Delegates will elect the national president, the national executive vice-president and the alternate national executive vice-president on the morning of Friday, May 5.

A media room will be set up at all times during the Convention and will be equipped with a television monitor with live coverage from the Convention floor. Media badges and kits will be available upon registration in the media room. PSAC staff members will also be on hand to provide assistance.
