PSAC members demand federal health and safety regulations be upheld

OTTAWA– At the PSAC National Health and Safety Conference to be held in Ottawa from January 19 to 21, 2007, over 300 union members will develop strategies to address the Government’s move towards occupational health and safety deregulation and its impact on enforcement of current health and safety law.  In addition, delegates will examine means of increasing workplace health and safety protection.

The theme of the conference is “Regulation works!” and objectives include reviewing the incidences of deregulation of workers’ rights and the environment, the development of union tactics to counter the myth of the careless worker and a review of the present enforcement practices of health and safety legislation in order to develop union-based strategies that improve the enforcement of legislation and protect workers.

Speakers at the conference include Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Executive Director Bruce Campbell, Massachusetts AFL-CIO Health and Safety Co-ordinator Nancy Lessin and Equiterre Communications Co-ordinator Hugo Séguin.

For more information about the conference, visit the PSAC web site at www.psac-afpc.com, under "Convention and Conferences" in the "News" section.
