Message delivered to Vic Toews
Members of the PSAC/Yukon Employees Union picketed outside the Westmark Hotel in Whitehorse, on Monday February 18, 2008. The Conservatives were having a fundraiser at the hotel and Treasury Board President, Vic Toews, was the guest speaker. Minister Toews refused to meet with the demonstrators, but two of them, Julie Docherty President of the Yukon Area Council, and Mike Nugent, Yukon Territorial Director with PSAC North Region Executive Committee, entered the meeting.
Docherty and Nugent spoke with the minister and gave him a couple of messages:
The PSAC members want negotiations to progress more rapidly, particularly since PSAC consciously submitted notice to bargain and bargaining documents at the earliest possible time.
The members are impatient to reach a fair settlement and the employer's demands on "hours of work" are a stumbling block to an agreement because many members feared certain business line managers would initiate shift work schedules, which are known to negatively affect workers' health and home lives.
Jean-Francois Des Lauriers, the PSAC Regional Executive Vice-president for the North, cautioned the federal Conservatives that PSAC members are losing patience with the slow pace of negotiations and the Government can expect more demonstrations as members show solidarity with their union bargaining team
