PSAC members at Parks Canada will hand out leaflets and stickers to visitors and delegates to UNESCO’S 32nd Session of the World Heritage Committee in Quebec City, urging them to consider respect for heritage workers as an important part of preserving and protecting the world’s natural and cultural heritage.
They are also inviting UNESCO delegates to a meet-and-greet at the Delta Hotel on René Levesque boulevard on July 3 to meet the people who protect, preserve and communicate the significance of Canada’s natural and cultural heritage sites.
Workers are an essential component of our heritage sites. Workers built, operate and maintain historic buildings, monuments, canals and locks. Workers protect and preserve our national parks and natural heritage areas. Workers interpret the significance of our heritage to generations of people. Doesn’t it make sense then that respect for heritage includes respect for workers?
Parks Canada is the federal government agency dedicated to the protection and presentation of Canada’s national parks, national historic sites and related heritage areas. The workers at Parks Canada are committed to and take great pride in carrying out their mandate. However, they are finding it harder and harder to do their important work when they are faced with job insecurity and unfair working conditions.
Join us in Quebec City on July 3 to support our brothers and sisters working at Parks Canada. Just look for a large banner and your fellow union members in black t-shirts that say, "Respect for workers is respect for heritage."
