October 2008
First off, we welcomed Mike Vanson and Gary Paynter — two new team members — to the world of negotiations.
The team met with the employer on September 30, October 1 and 2, 2008.
During the session we received data from the employer about harassment complaints within the CFIA from across the country. At first glance, the numbers seem to be low in relation to the number of grievances and investigations that the Union is handling.
Currently we are seeking a new harassment clause in the collective agreement that would provide grievable protections against personal harassment, bullying and abuse of authority.
We continued to press on issues surrounding hours of work and overtime as well as prep and wash-up time. Our next session will include some on-site plant visits to help both negotiating teams become familiarized with the operations.
The parties dealt with two packages of proposals this week without reaching agreement on either of them, however, we have identified the major elements where there is agreement and disagreement. The team also continued its work on a pay package that will be tabled in the future once finalized.
The team appreciates your continued support of our efforts as we attempt to resolve the remaining outstanding issues.
We encourage members to contact their local representatives and participate in our mobilization efforts as talks continue. We will be meeting again during the first week of December.
